Black Hawk College offers a number of programs and resources for first-generation and underrepresented students. Explore our services and see if you are eligible.
Community college students often balance a job, family and other responsibilities along with their academic work. At times, many students come to Black Hawk College as the first in their family to attend college. We can help you succeed.
Perkins Career Program Support
If you are enrolled in a Black Hawk College career and technical education (CTE) program, you can take advantage of Perkins Career Program Support Services. Whether you are working towards a Certificate or AAS degree, we are here to help you succeed!
Multicultural Entrepreneur Center
The Multicultural Entrepreneurial Center, or MEC, serves students from underrepresented backgrounds, first-generation students and aspiring business entrepreneurs. We work with students on English as a Second Language skills, academic skills, setting up mentoring relationships, setting up business internships and community development opportunities (also called service learning).
More Support Services
Disability Resources & Access
Accommodations from testing assistance to alternate book formats, technologies and sign language interpreters are all free to BHC students who have a documented disability.
BHC Food Pantry
We have partnered with River Bend Food Bank to provide perishable and non-perishable food to any BHC student.
Counseling and Mental Health Support
All counseling services are free to current BHC students. To schedule a confidential appointment, please call, email or stop by our office on either campus.
Scholarships
There are many ways to find scholarship money. We also offer academic and athletic achievement awards specifically for BHC students and can recommend other sources.
Grants
A grant is financial aid that does not have to be repaid as long as you complete your classes. Some are intended for students coming from low-income households, underrepresented communities or for students going into specific programs.
Advising
Whether currently enrolled or thinking about attending, you can count on BHC educational advisors year-round. Your advisor is your constant go-to resource on campus and will support you proactively and holistically.
Tutoring
All Black Hawk College students have access to free tutoring. Start early in the semester and come often. We’re here for your academic success!
